When it comes to family session outfit picks, as a family photographer, I tell my clients not to stress about wardrobe, I guide them with a Client Style board I’ve created and help them choose outfits. As a mom organizing family session outfit picks for her family, I totally freak out and second guess every style decision I’ve made, I wonder if white was a good choice, if Ryan will be sweaty and it will show, if Easton will stay clean long enough to take a picture and if Ev will pitch a fit if her dress doesn’t twirl.

All the worst possible wardrobe malfunctions and issues rush through my mind as I stand there staring at what I’ve picked out. Thankfully, my rational mind comes back into play and I step out of my ‘mom’ shoes and into my Photographer shoes. I find the patterns that play well together, the colors that blend and pull from each other and I make sure our style choices reflect our setting we chose.

I tend to pick out what I’m wearing first and this year was no exception. I grabbed this dress on sale during Dôen’s sample sale a few months ago and upon trying it on, I instantly knew I wanted to wear this for family pictures. I based everyone else’s outfits off the dress so it makes it somewhat easy… with the exception of dressing my husband. He never let’s me pick out new things for him for pictures so this year I just ordered a few things in his size and am hoping he will wear them (fingers crossed)!

My dress brings in a very feminine element so I chose this dress for Ev. It’s still feminine in shape but the solid color and 3/4 sleeves tone it down to balance out my dress. I chose a white henley for Easton to draw on the white of my dress but some relaxed jeans to match Everly’s toned down dress. For Ryan, I really wanted to play on the rust color floral embroidery of my dress so I picked him up these pants. I love the texture and the color matches my print. I chose two shirts for him to choose from, my top pick is this navy and blue stripe henley. It has a great texture to it that will photograph nicely with each individual kid but it isn’t overly patterned or textured that it clashes with my dress.

Here’s a few other options that are great for the family! Most of these can be mixed and matched depending on your location and color scheme. I try to stick with a main color theme that will blend with my home and the elements around us in the images. We are doing a beach session so I chose blue. Navy blue will contrast well against sand and rocks and blend well with the ocean waves. Plus, you can find a sprinkle of navy blue in just about every room in my home, it’s a clear favorite!

So as a family photographer, my advice to you is to choose something new for your Family Session outfit picks! There is nothing I love more than hanging our family images and loving our outfit choices! While the smiles and connections are what’s important, the color scheme and clothing choices may distract you 10 years from now… make sure you really love what you’re wearing! I can’t wait for our session with Jolene and to wear this dress again! I may never take it off after our session!
