We are starting our second week of an exterior renovation and this past week has really reminded me how important it is for the babes and I to get up and out at least once a day. With the construction taking over our driveway, carport and backyard, it hasn’t been exactly easy to get outside so I opted to hang inside. Late last week I started feeling pretty down and realized that we hadn’t been to a play date or even on a walk all week. Heck, even the dogs were going stir crazy.
I say this a lot, especially to new mamas, the most important thing to do in the first few weeks of bringing baby home is to get out of the house! That first trip out, even if it is just for a walk around the block, can feel so refreshing and empowering. The confidence you get from those first few trips is really important. To feel like “hey, I’ve got this” is something every mama should feel.
Our babes came home on separate days so our first trip out was to a doctors appointment for Easton with only Easton. We took Everly home that day. The following day we had a doctors appointment for Ev. That was our first official outing with both babes and my mom was there to help me through the entire experience. I came home feeling completely exhausted but totally empowered. We left the house once every day after that. The first month involved a lot of trips to the mall because it was a wide open space where we could walk around, eat lunch, use the Mothers’ room at Bloomingdales and Nordstrom and of course, shop!
It’s not “easy” to get up and out with twins, but it’s crucial to our sanity, both the babes and mine. Easton has a lot of energy to burn off, Ev loves to people watch and I love the fresh air and being surrounded by others. Our Up and Out must-haves include the stroller, both carriers (inevitably, I’ll put them in the stroller and both will want to be in the carrier or vice-versa, so I just always have both options available), the diaper bag (see what’s in our diaper bag HERE), carseats, Covered Goods nursing cover, and a slew of other various things…
Sadly, we visit the mall a lot less these days because Easton has little patience for shopping. Our Up and Out is mostly to play dates or on walks up to our neighborhood parks. We love to grab a bite to eat too, the babes are currently obsessed with eating! Where are your favorite places to take baby?
